Walford College Animal Care Unit
Walford & North Shropshire College
Link (formerly MBCE) was appointed by Walford & North Shropshire College to provide Structural Engineering services (both sub and superstructure) to support the development of a new Animal Care Unit on the Walford College Campus.
Walford College constructed a new build Animal Care Centre on land within their existing College campus as a facility to train students in the care of a range of animals including dogs, cats, rodents and mammals. The facility which includes a monkey island, won the RICS Midlands sustainability award.
This centre incorporated a range of building materials and energy sources and is also used as a student teaching facility to demonstrate how each of the different design features has affected the whole life of the building and its energy use, these included:
- wood chip boiler using locally sourced materials
- ground source heat pumps
- photovoltaic panels
- wind turbo generator
- biomass boiler (the college intend to produce their own fuel by growing short rotation willow coppice and Miscanthus crops, and with the waste products of their forestry courses)
- natural ventilation
- green oak cladding from within the college grounds
- a rainwater balancing pond provides a new wildlife habitat.
