Early Careers At Link

The places we live, work and travel through don’t happen by accident. Behind every new space is a team of engineers helping shape the world around us.

What stood out most was how much everyone genuinely cares about each other.

Going from working on site as a groundworker to working in a warm office was a big change for me! What stood out most was how much everyone genuinely cares about each other. From the directors through to apprentices, everyone is treated equally, and there’s a real personal feel.

At Link, I’ve progressed to managing my own projects and developed an in-depth understanding of Civil 3D. My favourite projects so far have been the Piddington scheme in Northampton, which included a Section 278 package and a small residential development, and the St Luke’s Hospice scheme in Basildon. I managed both independently, with responsibility for client and local authority liaison, while Jason provided occasional oversight.
Jason has been a great manager. He has always been understanding whenever I’ve come to him with problems and has been supportive in helping to resolve them. He’s someone I know I could call in an emergency, even outside of working hours, and I know he would be happy to help.

I would highly recommend applying to join Link. It’s a great opportunity to gain hands-on experience, work on real projects, and learn from experienced professionals while developing your skills.

Will Merricks Civil Engineering Technician

Link Engineering

Knowing I am valued as an individual and not just a cog in the machine is great.

My first conversations with the directors convinced me that this was the right place to start my civil engineering career. I liked the fact that Link is a closely knit team where everyone knows everyone.

After starting as a graduate in my first engineering role, there was a lot of learning from the start. Both my senior colleagues and those around me have continuously helped me develop both my base engineering knowledge, as well as my technical skills in using the engineering software.

So far, I’ve been enjoying all the learning opportunities I’ve had. It has been great to be given the chance to develop my engineering knowledge. The company is a closely knit community which makes it an enjoyable place to work and knowing I am valued as an individual and not just a cog in the machine is great.

Link is a great place to begin your career, knowing that the team genuinely cares about your development and wants you to learn.

Daniel Donohoe Assistant Engineer MEng

Link Engineering

Within only a few weeks I felt like a valued member of the team.

I was attracted to the placement because I wanted the opportunity to work in a professional engineering consultancy, contribute to real projects, and learn from people with a lot of technical knowledge.
When I first joined the company, I was made to feel welcome by everyone around me. My colleagues were friendly, respectful, and willing to help, and within only a few weeks I felt like a valued member of the team.

Since starting my Year in Industry, I have developed a much stronger understanding of the software and tools used within the industry, while also gaining insight into the commercial side of consultancy, including how projects are managed, delivered, and communicated to clients.
One of my favourite parts has been the opportunity to work on multiple large-scale residential schemes. I have also enjoyed leading a Link Walk Talk and an ICE work group session, which have helped me gain confidence in communication, leadership, and professional development.

My Year in Industry has given me practical experience across different projects, improved my technical knowledge, and helped me build the skills and confidence I need to begin my graduate career.

Rhys Radford Undergraduate Engineer

Link Engineering

A few months in, I was designing a zebra crossing, liaising with the council, and building confidence in communicating design decisions.

I first joined Link as a placement student and was immediately attracted to the collaborative ethos. There is great communication between colleagues and disciplines, a huge emphasis on respect for employees across all levels of experience, and everyone’s voice is heard. I also love the wide variety of work we do, which allows me to expand my engineering knowledge and inform decisions I otherwise wouldn’t be able to make.

Link has a very friendly atmosphere, both within the office and towards external stakeholders. We believe that everyone deserves to be treated with kindness, honesty, and respect, and you will be valued as an employee no matter your role. I recently moved from our Birmingham office to our Manchester office and also got married in a similar timeframe, and Link were extremely supportive throughout, making sure I was doing okay personally and helping to take on my workload at the time.

Link provides a very hands-on experience, allowing you to pick up lots of knowledge and practical work very quickly, while the Training Agreement with the ICE provides a straightforward route to Chartership. If you are looking for a workplace that values working efficiently and supporting all employees’ growth both professionally and personally, then Link may well be the place for you.
